Expansion tank is just overflowed? Here's why!
The water tank belongs to the water equipment in the car cooling system, and the expansion tank provides coolant reserve for the water tank.

The role of the expansion tank
The expansion tank - or auxiliary bottle, is actually an auxiliary equipment of the water tank, it will be an important part of the cooling system. The expansion tank can adjust the pressure from the water tank, which will produce pressure when the temperature changes. In other words, it will reserve the coolant liquid from radiator and engine, which plays a great role in the cooling system. Therefore, don’t add too much coolant liquid.
How it work?
The working principle of the expansion tank can be described as, expansion and contraction.
When the car is running, the increase in water temperature causes the air inside the water tank. Water (or steam exactly) will flow out through the diversion pipe connected to the water chamber on the radiator; when the vehicle stops working, the temperature of the water tank will be decreased and the air pressure inside the water tank too. So that the water in the expansion tank (or the water storage parts connected to the draft tube) will flow back to the radiator water tank.
Generally, the opening pressure of the outlet valve of the auxiliary kettle is about 90KPa, while the pressure of the inlet valve is only 0~4KPa. That is to say, under normal circumstances, the water in the expansion tank is rarely lost in large amounts, but can be replenished in time. The expansion tank can play the role of replenishing water in time, thus it can prolong the service life of the engine.
Causes of the overflow of the expansion tank
The expansion tank cover is a two-way valve. When the pressure is high, the water in the tank will flow to the expansion one, and when the temperature drops, the water in the expansion one will be sucked back into the water tank. When the water in the expansion tank increases, it may overflow. The overflow phenomenon may be caused by the following reasons.

After the coolant cools down quickly, it starts from the cover of the refill tank due to excessive pressure.

When the car is turned off, the temperature is high.

The water tank and water pipe are blocked, and the water tank cover and the water tank connected to the water are leaked.
