General Motors is planning to equip its next generation cars with eye and head tracking technology, aimed at increasing driving safety.

The technology installed in the car will detect drivers head movement and alert them when they are not concentrating on certain areas of road while on the wheels or the rearview mirror, reported Financial Times.

The new technology is expected to be supplied by Takata, which has been supplying most of the safety parts for GM vehicles.

Ken Kroeger, Seeing Machines' CEO, told the Financial Times: "Safety doesn't sell cars - sexy sells car...But once cameras are there, they can be expanded for other features and purposes."

The next phase of the technology could include sensors which will gather consumer data that is aimed at personalizing the car for drivers, and Seeing Machine's equipment that will allow drivers to activate apps simply by looking at them on the screen.
